History

The Birkenhead Hotel was built by Tooth’s & Co Brewery circa 1928 after the liquor license was transferred from the original hotel adjacent to the Iron Cove Bridge. It remained the Birkenhead Hotel until the mid-1980’s when the name was changed to the Lion’s Head Hotel. The name was changed back to the Birkenhead Hotel in the early 2000’s.
The Hotel has been renovated numerous times over the years with the most recent being in 2018.
The name ‘Birkenhead’ comes from an industrial port town in England very close to Liverpool. This is where a ship named HMS Birkenhead was built and that subsequently became wrecked off the coast of South Africa, it is famous as being the first to use the ‘women and children first’ protocol when abandoning ship.
The Hotel has been owned and operated by the Clark family since 1995.
